A Spring High School teacher was arrested and charged on Saturday after being accused of having an improper relationship with a student, the second educator from the campus in a month facing such allegations, authorities said.
Matthew Martin Tillman, 33, was charged with three felonies, said Harris County District Attorney's spokeswoman Donna Hawkins.
Two of the charges allege improper physical contact and one accuses Tillman of improper text-messaging, Hawkins said, adding that the allegations stemmed from incidents allegedly involving a female student that occurred between May 1 and Sept. 24.
Tillman is in the Harris County Jail on $150,000 bail. His next court appearance is scheduled for Monday.
Tillman, a history teacher and volleyball coach at the school since 1999, has been placed on administrative leave, according to a letter sent to parents on Saturday from Spring principal Donna Ullrich.
"It is distressing to say the least that another teacher has broken the trust that parents and the greater community should be able to expect from every educator," Ullrich wrote in the letter, noting that officials check criminal backgrounds and references of all job applicants.
On Oct. 12, Spring High School science teacher Deanna Higgins, 27, was charged with having an improper relationship with a student and with sexual assault of a child, both felonies.
Court documents indicate that Higgins' ex-husband, who discovered questionable text messages on a phone the defendant gave their 8-year-old son, tipped school district officials.
Higgins' next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 18.
